NIST CSF & 800-171 Alignment in Texas
Every customer, carrier, and prime contractor asks security questions in a slightly different format. Building one NIST-aligned baseline lets you answer all of them from a single source of truth. Sentinel-Pros builds and runs that baseline remotely for clients across Texas, with on-site sessions available in Houston and arranged from Houston elsewhere.
The Problem
Mid-sized Texas companies rarely fall under one clean regulation. A manufacturer sends a customer questionnaire in March, the cyber insurance renewal arrives in June with its own control list, a prime contractor forwards a flow-down clause in September, and the bank asks something different again. Each request gets answered from scratch by whoever has time, which means the answers drift and none of them reflect a documented reality. Meanwhile firms holding controlled unclassified information under a federal flow-down face a specific 800-171 obligation with a system security plan and a plan of action behind it, and discover that a spreadsheet of yes answers is not the same as an implemented control. Leadership ends up funding tools reactively, one questionnaire at a time, without ever knowing whether the overall posture improved.
The Solution
We build one baseline mapped to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework functions and, where the contract requires it, to the 800-171 control families underneath. Practically, that means an honest current-state assessment, a target profile that matches your actual risk and obligations rather than a maximal one, and a prioritised roadmap leadership can fund in stages. For defense supply chain clients we produce the system security plan and plan of action and milestones in the form assessors expect, with implementation described rather than asserted. Because everything here is documentation, interviews, configuration review, and evidence, the work is delivered remotely and clients anywhere in Texas get the same engagement. Houston clients can have us in the room, and we schedule travel from Houston elsewhere when a working session with the leadership team is worth the trip. Pricing is a fixed monthly retainer scoped on a discovery call.
Core Responsibilities
Know Where You Stand
Build The Baseline
Answer Everyone Once
Engagement Process
Find Out Who Is Asking
We collect the actual requests driving this: contract clauses, customer questionnaires, insurer applications, and any federal flow-down. The obligations determine the target, not a generic best practice list.
Assess Honestly
We review systems, interview the people doing the work, and record what is truly in place. An assessment that flatters the company is worthless the first time somebody verifies it.
Set The Target And The Order
We define the target profile and sequence the gaps by risk and by which contracts depend on them, so the first quarter of spending closes the exposures that actually threaten revenue.
Implement And Evidence
Controls get implemented and, just as importantly, evidenced. The output is a live baseline plus an artifact library your team can hand to the next customer without starting over.
Where We Deliver This
Common Questions
Is NIST CSF a regulation we have to comply with?
The framework itself is voluntary for most private companies, which is precisely why it is useful as a common baseline. It gives you a structured way to describe your posture that customers, insurers, and auditors recognise. NIST 800-171 is different: when it flows down through a federal contract clause it is a binding requirement.
What is the relationship between 800-171 and CMMC?
CMMC is the Department of Defense assessment programme that verifies whether the 800-171 controls are actually implemented. If you build a real 800-171 baseline with a defensible system security plan, you are doing the substantive work a CMMC assessment examines. We will tell you which level your contracts point toward and where the gaps sit.
We are a small manufacturer with no security staff. Is this realistic?
Yes, and it is the common case. The baseline is scaled to your size, and most of the controls are administrative or configuration changes rather than expensive products. What a small company needs most is sequencing, so limited budget goes to the controls that close real exposure first.
Can you do this if we are nowhere near Houston?
Yes. Assessment, documentation, and evidence work are remote by nature, so a supplier in Wichita Falls or a services firm in Corpus Christi is handled the same as a Houston client. When a physical review of a plant or facility genuinely matters, we schedule that visit from Houston.
How is this priced?
A fixed monthly retainer set on a discovery call, based on headcount, number of systems and sites, and which obligations apply. Remediation that requires new tooling or licensing is quoted separately so you can see what is our work and what is product cost.

BOOK A CONSULTATIONAcross Texas
The defense and federal supply chain reaches deep into Texas, and it drags 800-171 with it. Machine shops, composites fabricators, and electronics suppliers around Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, and Red Oak sell into aerospace primes and receive flow-down clauses written for far larger organisations. Firms serving Fort Cavazos, Sheppard Air Force Base, and the San Antonio cyber and cloud community meet the same requirements from a different direction. Beyond federal work, the framework earns its keep across the rest of the state. Gulf Coast refiners and chemical operators push security expectations onto the engineering, inspection, and turnaround contractors who touch their networks and their sites. Independent producers and midstream operators in the Permian Basin now write cyber language into service agreements. Regional hospital systems and physician groups need a structure that ties HIPAA duties to something operational rather than to a policy binder. Austin and Dallas technology firms use the framework to answer enterprise procurement without maintaining five separate compliance programmes. Agricultural processors, grain handlers, and food manufacturers in the Panhandle and along the Interstate 35 corridor face buyer requirements they have never seen before. One baseline serves all of these, which is the entire argument for building it once and maintaining it deliberately.
