Incident Response & Ransomware Recovery in Galveston

The worst time to figure out who to call is while your screens are showing a ransom note. Sentinel-Pros writes the plan before that day and works the plan on that day: contain, recover, and get the notifications right. Galveston is inside our on-site area, so we can be in your building when the work needs hands.

The Problem

Ransomware rarely stops at encryption anymore. Data is copied out first, then systems are locked, and the pressure to pay comes with a threat to publish. For a Galveston business that means three problems at once: operations are down, sensitive information may be in someone else's hands, and there is a legal clock running on telling the people whose data it was. Most companies discover in that moment that their backups were never tested, that the person who knew the environment left last year, and that their cyber policy has requirements they were supposed to have followed. Add a storm week, a closed causeway, or an office nobody can reach, and improvising becomes impossible.

The Solution

We work both halves. Before an incident, we build a response plan that names decision makers, alternates, and outside parties, verify that backups restore rather than merely run, and keep a copy of the plan somewhere that does not depend on the systems it is meant to recover. During an incident we contain, investigate scope, coordinate with your insurer and counsel, and rebuild in an order that gets your revenue systems back first. Remote work carries most of the response, and for the parts that need presence, including rebuilding hardware or working from a mainland location while the island is closed, we are there. Pricing is scoped on a discovery call as a fixed monthly retainer, with major recovery engagements handled separately.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Core Responsibilities

Before the Incident

A written response plan naming who decides, who speaks, and who is called first, with an alternate for every name
Backups verified by actual restoration tests, including at least one copy that ransomware cannot reach or encrypt
A tabletop exercise with your leadership so the first time you use the plan is not the real thing

During the Incident

Containment first: isolate affected systems, cut off the attacker's access, and stop the spread before anything else
Evidence preserved properly, because your insurer, your counsel, and possibly a regulator will need it later
Scope determined honestly, including whether data was copied out, which changes everything that follows

Recovery and Aftermath

Rebuilding in priority order so the systems that bring in revenue return before the ones that are merely convenient
Support for breach notification duties, including health information rules and Texas notice requirements
A written root cause and a hardening plan, so the same door is not standing open when you reopen
HOW IT WORKS

Engagement Process

01

Plan and Prepare

We build the plan around your business: what has to run first, who can authorize a shutdown, and how leadership reaches each other when the island is evacuated. Copies live offline and off site, not only in the file share that could be encrypted.

02

Prove the Backups

Backups are restored in a test, not just reported as successful. Restoration time is measured against what your operation can actually tolerate, and gaps between the two are fixed while there is time to fix them.

03

Respond and Contain

When something happens, we take control of the technical response and give you one line of communication. Insurer and counsel requirements are respected from the first hour, because a wrong step early can cost a claim.

04

Rebuild and Report

Systems come back in the order your business needs them, cleaned rather than merely restored. You receive documentation of what happened and what changed, suitable for your carrier, your customers, and your board.

FAQ

Common Questions

Should we pay a ransom?

That is a business and legal decision, made with your counsel and insurer, not one we make for you. What we can do is establish whether recovery from backup is realistic and how long it would take, which is the information that decision actually turns on. Paying also does not resolve a notification obligation if data left your network.

We already back up to a cloud service. Is that not enough?

Only if the backups are isolated from the accounts an attacker would compromise, and only if they have been restored in a test. Modern ransomware looks for backup systems first and encrypts or deletes what it can reach. An untested backup is a hope, and the difference shows up on the worst possible day.

What if this happens during a hurricane or an evacuation?

That combination is planned for here rather than treated as unlikely, since the island has lived it. The plan covers who has authority when leadership is scattered, how to communicate when the office is unreachable, and how work continues from a mainland location. Response does not depend on anyone crossing the causeway.

Our practice works with UTMB and holds patient records. What are we obligated to do?

If protected health information was exposed, federal breach notification duties apply and Texas gives you a short window to notify affected residents and the state as well. Those clocks start based on discovery, which is why an accurate scope determination matters so much. We support the technical and evidence side and work alongside your counsel, who owns the legal call.

How fast can you be on the island if something happens?

Most of the immediate response is remote and starts as soon as you call, which is what containment requires anyway. Galveston is inside our on-site service area, so we come when hardware, rebuilds, or hands on work require it, scheduled realistically rather than promised as a stunt. Where the causeway is closed, we stage the work from the mainland and continue remotely.

Incident Response & Ransomware Recovery for Galveston, Texas

Galveston businesses already know what recovery planning means, because the island has practiced the physical version repeatedly. The cyber version deserves the same seriousness and rarely gets it. A hotel or condominium operation on Seawall Boulevard that loses its property management system during a summer weekend cannot check anyone in, and there is no manual workaround that scales. A restaurant or retail shop in The Strand that loses its point of sale during a festival weekend loses the year's best revenue days. Clinics, imaging groups, and billing companies connected to UTMB Health face something worse than downtime, because exposed patient records trigger federal notification duties and a state clock measured in days, regardless of whether the practice can still see patients. Marine services firms, agents, and logistics operations supporting the Port of Galveston sit in schedules where a missed turnaround affects counterparties far beyond the island. Insurance agencies and adjusting firms in the American National economy hold claim files that are valuable to steal and embarrassing to lose. Layer the storm reality on top: an incident during evacuation week, with staff spread across Texas and the causeway closed, is not a hypothetical scenario here. The plan has to work when nobody can get to the building, and the only way to know it does is to write it down and test it first.
